Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is as old as the Church itself. From the moment that the soldier’s spear opened the side of Jesus Christ hanging in death upon the Cross – a moment immortalized by Saint John the Apostle in his Gospel – the small band of faithful souls standing by in mournful silence gave witness to the sacrificial death of the Redeemer as they looked up into that pierced, stilled, emptied Heart. "Exinanivit semetipsum" Saint Paul says: "He emptied Himself." In that Sacred Heart was conceived the Church, and from that open Heart the Church was born. All of her faithful souls throughout the ages continually return to that instant of the opening of Christ’s side on the Cross in their prayers and meditations to draw strength and refreshment for their souls from that fountain of living waters.
The Heart of Jesus is the greatest emblem of Divine Love, But it is also much more than a symbol. While praying the Litany of the Sacred Heart, we say "Heart of Jesus, substantially united to the Word of God!" Some translations render this: "Heart of Jesus, hypostatically united to the Word of God!" Hypostatically (from Greek) and substantially (from Latin) mean essentially the same thing: they refer to the fact that the Sacred Heart is the Heart of a Divine Person, the Son of God. This is God’s Own Heart! It is more than a counterpart to the crucifix. The crucifix shows the outward, visible wounds of Our Lord; the image of the Sacred Heart focuses on His interior sufferings – the agony and the anguish He suffered for us.
The "new order" seeks to replace devotion to the Sacred Heart with a devotion to the Divine Mercy. While the Divine Mercy is certainly worthy of adoration, nonetheless this devotion is used by the Modernists to suit their purposes. Mankind needs to hear about God’s justice and man’s injustice; not presumption on God’s all-forgiveness but the grace of repentance. That is the meaning of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
