Our Faith tells us that the Mass is the unbloody Sacrifice of the Cross, that is, the very same Sacrifice of His Own life which Our Redeemer offered for us on Calvary. That sacrificial death of Christ is shown forth by the two-fold consecration of the Body and the Blood of Jesus, which represents the bloody death he endured for the love of each one of us.
But the Mass encapsulates, as it were, the entire life of Jesus in a most beautiful and powerful way. First of all, the Offertory prayers tell of a holy "oblation" to come, and they announce to us the long-awaited fulfillment of the promise of a Redeemer from Heaven and His Incarnation in the womb of the Virgin Mary at the Annunciation. The consecration of the Host represents His Nativity, the birth of Christ which we are now celebrating. The consecration of the Precious Blood then signifies His sacrificial death. The Communion next shows the burial of Jesus, during which His soul “descended into hell" to deliver from death the souls of the Just who had long anticipated His coming and who received Him with great joy! And the entirety of these events and ceremonies manifests the triumph of Our Lord in His resurrection and glorification and Ascension into Heaven, for only One Who is truly God could accomplish such wonders. If we find in the Mass the life of Our Lord Jesus Christ, should we not also "live" the Mass?
